Sewmantra Wins the Liebster Blog Award!

I have been handed the Liebster Blog Award

I am super happy and excited to announce that
I have been handed down the Liebster Blog Award
by the lovely and very talented Dana of Tumblestone Handmakery
Thank you Dana for your thinking of me for this award. It was so thoughtful of you!

Here is my lovely award:

For those of you that don't know what the  Liebster Blog Award is, it is an award to recognize people that other bloggers are inspired by and enjoy and  to show their fellow bloggers
which blogs that you should go take a look at, because chances are, they will enjoy them too!
The award is only given to blogs that have less than 200 followers, and is there to help recognize
awesome newer and smaller blogs!
Great idea!
The Liebster Award takes it’s name from the German word meaning Beloved, Dearest or Favorite.

The tradition includes passing the award along to 5 bloggers who have motivated and inspired you.To accept the award you must:

1. Link back to the person who gave it to you and thank them

2. Post the award to your blog

3. Give the award to 5 bloggers with less than 200 followers that you appreciate and value.

4. Leave a comment on the 5 blogs to let them know that they have been offered this award.

In keeping with the tradition of this award, I have listed five blogs to nominate - and in no particular order as all are equally amazing!

  • CBs Tavern (http://cbstavern.blogspot.com) - A tavern on the rise in Western Colorado. A great site to learn about what is happening with the tavern as it comes together, but maybe better, Carrie (CB) has a wonderful way of explaining things that just make you laugh, because who knew that setting up a restaurant could be so entertaining. A site very unknown, but really fun to read!

  • Scribbleprints (http://scribbleprints.blogspot.com) - A recent recipient of my monthly Free Ad Space giveaway and what a treat to learn about Gale and her talents. Check her out as she is one talented scribbler + she has some great stuff on her blog worthy of your attentions!

Ruby Murray Recycles - Old Map Washi Tape Tutorial

Who doesn't love a great idea using Vintage Map/Atlases, not surprisingly I also have a hoard of these kicking about, just can't seem to pass up an old dusty 1970's Atlas, hmmmmm the smell of a dusty old hardback! This week I'll be bringing you  projects using old maps/Atlases and shock horror old Geography text books (sorry to my high school Geog teacher Mr Bumchin, I mean Mr Bunting!)

This one is so simple but just in case, here's how to make your own Map Washi Tape.

What you need:

Scissors
Double Sided Tape
Old Map/Atlas - Use a page with a mix of land mass and sea for colourful tape.
Decide which side of the paper is most attractive, the flip side of mine had text so that was an easy choice.

Lay the double sided tape down horizontally and in a fairly straight line across the map/Atlas page you want to be able to read the places, that's the fun part.

Leave a small gap between each piece of tape to make it easier to cut out.

Marvel at your cute pieces of tape, peel off the back then use them for parcels, sticking down envelopes, or some of the cute projects I have coming up ...

Monthly Artist Features | More than Just "Crocheted Little Things"

Ice Cream Cone Pin Cushion
The blog has been undergoing a major expansion - we are changing into a collective. Along with these morphisms, there are some interesting diversifications happening among some of our publications - one publication that is expanding exponentially is the Monthly Artist Features

This week I have another amazing artist to chat up. I have the privilege to work her regularly through the site, Etsy Giveaways- where handmade artisans and crafters can advertise their giveaways.

With no further ado, I'd like to introduce you to Luisa Ioffredo Patterson (Aka Lu), the busy hands that create the super cute stuff at Crocheted Little Things. I had a chance to chat with her via an e-interview; here is what she had to say.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Sewmantra Blog (SB): What is your art and how did you learn it?
Lu: I crochet all sort of home decor items and garments. I learned to make simple round pot holders when I was 9 years old from my mother. Then, I watched her and my grandma make the most intricate doilies and I was in love!!

SB: What do you think is the most interesting thing about your creative expression?
Lu: I guess the most interesting thing is that I didn't know I had it in me. Once I learned to crochet in a boring long summer vacation I thought it was cool, but didn't do much with it until I was put on bed rest for my second pregnancy. Just then I realized that I didn't always need a pattern to make things, I could envision something and created it from thin air!

Crocheted Plarn Water Bottle Holder
SB: What circumstances led you to sell your art/creations online?
Lu:I crochet to relax and keep my sanity mostly, but after giving away to charity and give gifts to family, my inventory was slowly but surely taking over my house, thus, the need to sell :)

SB: If you could use only 5 words to describe your work, what would they be and why?
Lu: My five words...
  • Fun because my cupcakes make people smile
  • Cute because that's what all my customers say
  • Handmade to not forget that each peace is made with thread or yarn, a hook and my own hands
  • Affordable as I strive to give my customer the best quality pieces choosing my material made in USA and keeping the cost reasonable
  • Funky and colorful because this is how the world around me is, enriched by the wonderful spirit of my children

SB: If you could be any kind of yarn or type of crochet hook, what would you be and why?
Crocheted Strawberry Cupcake Pillow
Lu: I think I can identify with the yarn I use the most and that will be acrylic. While most of my fellow crocheters skip over it as a cheap and common yarn, I think it represent me for the various colors and shades it comes it, from soft pastels, to bold and bright.  I also can identify with its practicality to be machine washable and very forgiving. Sometimes I see myself as fine cotton yarn: fine, clever and ready to curl at every round of life!

SB: Anything else interesting you'd like to share?
Lu: I will be soon opening a new store carrying vintage nightgowns from Italy, my birth land, and hopefully will be one day able to sell my inventory from my sewing basket on supadupa.

SB: If someone want's to buy something from you, how do they find you?
Lu: All my inventory is listed on my artfire shop. Some chosen pieces and my patterns are available on Etsy. My patterns, along with some extra destash supplies, are also available on Zibbet and I'm slowly uploading my patterns on Craftsy so they will be available for immediate downloading, rather than having the customer waiting to my email.

Thanks for reading and visiting. Lu appreciates it and so do we. If you like, love or otherwise enjoyed this article, share it!

A Day of Blah.

Do you ever have a blah day? That is me today artistically speaking. My glue gun is being a pain, I keep stabbing myself with needles and I feel that my bed is just taunting me from the other room. Not to mention I have come up against a supply issue I just can't seem to solve.

I am looking for white, fabric Stephanotis flower petals. They can be found online for twice the price they would otherwise be found in a store... except stores do not seem to carry wedding supplies any more. Can someone tell me when this happened, at least in my neck of the woods?

Thus, I am on a mission to avoid gouging my pocket or the lovely bride's of whom will have these gorgeous flowers attached to her cathedral veil.

Today I have a conundrum to solve - marching forward with band-aids on my fingers from burns and tiny stabbings. Today is beginning more like a struggle than a wiggle.

BUT! I must prevail. Okay, seriously, I had a tangent there, but what are your thoughts on finding these flowers around Northern Virgina or Western Shore Maryland?

I'm open to suggestions because time is ticking...
